Dr. Paul Martorelli
Assistant Teaching Professor, Wellesley College, USA

Paul Martorelli is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Wellesley College in the United States. He received his PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. His areas of expertise are contemporary Political theory, queer theory, and feminism. His research focuses on various relationships between identity and politics. He has analyzed how identity-based groups can mobilize on their own behalf without marginalizing or subordinating their own members through their political engagement. His current project explores the normativity of “American” as a national identity to chart how it justifies the devaluation of immigrants in public policy. By analyzing the normative construction of this national identity, he hopes to offer alternative accounts of “being American” that are able to constitute immigrants as equal socio-political members.
Paul’s commitment to interdisciplinary work extends beyond the classroom. He is a co-director of the ACTS for Human Rights internship between Wellesley and NOVA School of Law. In addition to teaching students how to advocate for justice, he also models these practices as the Vice President of the Wellesley Organized Academic Workers Union for non-tenure track faculty.
